New West Point Teachers
Last month, the new West Point teachers visited our museum to look around and learn more about West Point. We think they learned some things and had a good time in doing so. The young folks of our community are in good hands with this group of teachers.
Crab Carnival
The first weekend in October with Crab Carnival is our favorite time of the year. We will be open on Saturday so stop in and buy a hat, a book, a new calendar, or just take a look around at some of our refreshed or new dispays. You might want to look at some old West Point pictures on our big screen.
Terminal Hotel
When you stop by the museum during Crab Carnival, be sure to take your picture in front of the Terminal Hotel. We introduced this replica at the Chamber Gala in July. Lots of folks had their picture taken. You can visit this web site to see those pictures. https://gressitphotography.shootproof.com/gallery/22130209
New Exhibits
We have several new displays at the museum including this one that tells some of the story of the folks that lived in our area prior to the English at Jamestown. Our area has a long and rich history.
2024 Calendars
The 2024 calendars have arrived. You can buy your copy at the museum or at The Exchange On Main. The cost is $20. We can also mail you a copy for $23. These calendars have become real treasured keepsakes because of the great pictures of early West Point. Be sure to get your copy.
Local Plantations
This summer, several of our board members had a chance to tour Elsing Green. What a treat. Mr. Lafferty was a great host. We are very lucky to have a number of early plantations in our area that we can visit. We just added a section on our web site with a brief description of some of the local plantations.
HISTORY TIDBIT
After WW2, there was a push to attract business to WP. A group of men including L. M. Browning were going to open a shoe plant here. When the funding did not happen, Mr. Browning bought the building that had been built and eventually opened Browning Chevrolet. Here is an article from August 1950 Tidewater Review. In the late 1950’s, Mr. Browning sold the business to Mr Whitmore.
HSWP Project Updates
We are still moving ahead with a number of museum and other projects.
- First of all, we hope to have several new historical markers installed soon. Stay tuned.
- We are now talking with a local contractor and we are preparing to have a stand built for the old fire bells.
- We have signed an order to convert the garage behind the museum into archive storage. This should be completed very soon.
Your continued membership and financial support helps us tell the story of West Point history through the museum and our projects. Thank you!
